STAR PREVIEW Newport County v Man City

first_imgThis has been a fine edition of the FA Cup, a competition that many felt had lost its magic over recent seasons. Since the third round we’ve had AFC Wimbledon beating West Ham, Milwall beating Everton, Shrewsbury beating Stoke City, Gillingham beating Cardiff, and Accrington Stanley beating Ipswich. That’s before we get to Newport County, who have arguably had the best cup run of any non-Premier League side. County beat a strong Leicester side – and deservedly too – in the third round before then deservedly grabbing a late equaliser at Championship highflyers Middlesbrough. That gave them a home replay and an opportunity which they grabbed with both hands, when they simply wanted it more than the visitors who were both out-thought and also out fought. That would make them a team that any side would consider a potential banana slip of a draw, but Manchester City are not a normal side. It’s a fantastic opportunity for Newport to get more money in the coffers but this City side, which has already reached the final of the Carabao Cup, has been destroying its opposition in cup competitions.Manchester City have won their last four cup games by a combined margin of 22-0, with five of those goals worryingly coming against Premier League opposition in the shape of Burnley. Three of those games have taken place at the Etihad, but it’s impossible for Guardiola to pick a ‘weak’ side by conventional standards and what’s more, the City boss appears to be genuinely chasing cup success now.For their fourth round tie against Burnley, City started with Ederson, Walker, Danilo, Stones, Otamendi, Fernandinho, Gundogan, Mahrez, De Bruyne, Bernardo, and Jesus whilst Sterling, Aguero, Silva, and Laporte were on the bench.Gabriel Jesus has taken these chances with both hands – he has scored six goals in four domestic cup appearances – but the side is stacked with enough quality to to overcome Newport’s high energy game and ‘traditional’ pitch.Newport County v Man CityFA Cup 5th Round17:30 BT Sport 2 / BT Sport 4K UHDHEAD TO HEAD RECORD(Maximum 10 matches, from last 10 years)First meeting between teamsThe hosts have plenty of talent in their own ranks, with Jamile Matt and Padraig Almond scoring seven goals in the competition between them whilst Almond – who also scored against Tottenham last season – has also scored in every round so far, but City ought to be too good.RECOMMENDED BETS (scale of 1-100 points)BACK Manchester City 2-0 1 pt at 8/1 with starsports.betBACK Manchester City 3-0 1 pt at 13/2 with starsports.betPROFIT/LOSS SINCE JAN 1 2017: PROFIT 250.96 points(excluding Premier League ante-post and Six Nations ante-post)last_img
