first_imgPOUCE COUPE, B.C. – As of today, May 17, fire crews are still on the scene following a fire that destroyed the old Peace River Haven Seniors facility in Pouce Coupe late Wednesday night.According to Pouce Coupe CAO, Chris Leggett, fire crews continue to deal with hot spots and security has been set up to prevent anyone from entering the site.“The fire department responded to a few flare up’s of hotspots last night and today, and have extinguished those. The site has 24-hour security personnel assigned and perimeter safety fencing is being installed to prevent anyone from entering the site.  The security attendants have the Fire Department’s direct contact info if they see any more flare up’s in the next few days.” Leggett says investigations will be taking place over the next few days to try and determine the cause of the fire. The Peace River Haven Seniors Facility closed in 2012 and was put up for sale by Northern Health and was later sold.  Over the years several groups have tried to use the facility with one proposing to open a drug and alcohol treatment centre.  Those proposals never moved forward, and the facility had been left vacant since 2012.last_img read more

WASHINGTON — How do you get men excited about decades-old pills for hair loss, erectile dysfunction and other potentially embarrassing health conditions?Online startups including Hims and Roman are banking on a mix of convenience, viral marketing and glossy packaging to turn generic prescription drugs and other pharmacy staples into a profitable new business model. But some in the medical establishment are raising concerns about their marketing and the quality of care they provide.“There are both opportunities to improve access to care, but also risks to patients, and I think regulators are having to address that,” said Lisa Robin, an executive with the Federation of State Medical Boards, which represents the organizations that license and discipline physicians. The group has been advising U.S. physicians to carefully consider “their professional and ethical duties” before signing up to work for the companies.Hims and Roman each said in separate statements that their doctors are required to deliver the same standard of care on their platforms as they do in person.Like other on-demand services, Hims and Roman promise consumers quick, convenient access to what they want. That means customers essentially self-diagnose, selecting the medication of their choice and — pending approval by a doctor — receive the prescription by mail or through a local pharmacy. In place of a traditional exam, patients answer a battery of questions about their symptoms, medical history, allergies and other details.Similar companies specialize in contraceptives, sleep medications and pills for anxiety. Backing the trend are millions in venture dollars from investors searching for the next Warby Parker or Dollar Shave Club — blockbuster online brands that have upended the markets for eyeglasses and razors by cutting out traditional retailers.Dr. Adriane Fugh-Berman, who studies pharmaceutical marketing, worries the companies are minimizing the role of health professionals in carefully diagnosing and treating patients.“These are lifestyle drugs, and they have potentially serious adverse effects, and this seems like too casual a way to be obtaining them,” said Fugh-Berman, a professor at Georgetown University.Potential side effects of Viagra include dizziness, blurred vision, muscle pain and sudden hearing loss. The female libido drug Addyi, which is also available through the websites, can cause fainting when combined with alcohol. In some cases, the websites promote prescription drugs for unapproved uses, such as blood pressure drugs to reduce anxiety.Hims’ websites touts blood pressure-reducing beta blockers as a way to ease “performance anxiety during your big event — like a big presentation at work or interview.”While that kind of “off-label” prescribing is common for many physicians, drugmakers are barred from advertising such uses because they have not been federally approved. The online startups, echoing Uber and other Silicon Valley startups, say they are technology companies and are therefore not subject to those rules. The FDA didn’t comment on the websites but said in a statement that off-label drug use “should be a conversation between the consumer and the health care provider.”Prescription drugs sold by Hims and Roman — both founded in 2017 — are available at most pharmacies nationwide. And retail giants like Walmart and CVS Health also offer medical consultations through apps and websites. So what’s new here?Hims’ 30-year-old founder, Andrew Dudum, says his company is revamping the process “so people can have an amazing experience” and get “extremely beautiful products.”Hims — which also sells shampoo, vitamins and other consumer items — puts its products in discrete, minimalist packaging stamped with the company name. Its female-focused site, Hers, similarly offers custom-wrapped medications for low-sex drive alongside hair and skin products.Customers are invited to “Shop Sex” or “Shop Hair,” alongside Instagram-ready photos of young models and messages like: “we’re here to help reduce the stress and guesswork out of your sexy time.”Roman CEO Zachariah Reitano, 28, says his company offers customers a chance “to talk about these things that can be highly stigmatized.”But real-time communication between doctor and patient doesn’t always happen.Telemedicine laws vary by state, and in many cases physicians can write prescriptions after simply reviewing a patient’s stored responses to online questionnaires. Sometimes doctors will need to seek extra details via text messages or a phone call. Roman’s website gives an example of a typical transaction in which the patient spends 20 minutes providing information and the physician spends two minutes reviewing it.That’s about the same length as a traditional U.S. office visit, according to data published two years ago. And Roman and Hims say their model is more convenient, discrete and often cheaper than the traditional office visit. But customers looking for savings might be disappointed. Hims, Roman and most of their counterparts don’t take insurance, and instead charge a cash fee. Most of the drugs they sell can be found for less using prescription discount apps like GoodRx, which identifies the best prices at local pharmacies and applies coupons and discounts. For instance, Hims sells the generic form of the hair loss drug Propecia at $28.50 for a month’s supply, versus $11 at many national chains like Walmart or CVS.Hims said in a statement it offers “enormous value” and convenience by eliminating trips to the doctor, pharmacy visits and insurance copay fees.A spokesman for Roman declined to comment on its prices. As consumers increasingly migrate to the web for health services, experts say telemedicine will become more common. But even proponents of the technology stress the importance of maintaining conventional standards of care. Many large hospitals and insurers offer online consultations, while also giving physicians access to patients’ full medical records. In the case of someone seeking a beta blocker for anxiety, a physician might notice that the patient had an irregular heart reading at a previous checkup. That might signal a potential safety issue since beta blockers can sometimes cause a dangerously slow heart rate.Dr. Jonah Feldman says that kind of detail might be missed by an online service relying solely on patient-provided information. The new websites “are really moving backward to a more fragmented version of care,” said Feldman, a medical technology specialist at New York University’s Winthrop hospital in New York.___Follow Matthew Perrone on Twitter: @AP_FDAwriter___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. Jayasuruya said that he will advise the State Minister not to make public comments on the allegations without submitting evidence to back the claims. (Colombo Gazette) Several Parliamentarians raised concerns today that Ramanayake continues to make the allegations in the media without submitting evidence. The United National Party (UNP) had conducted its own investigations into the claims. The Police are investigating allegations made by State Minister Ranjan Ramanayake that some Parliamentarians use cocaine.Speaker Karu Jayasuruya told Parliament today that IGP Pujith Jayasundara had informed him that an investigation had been launched.

“The new evidence published today tells us that there is a risk of spread of Zika virus disease in the European region and that this risk varies from country to country,” said Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, in a press release. “With this risk assessment, we at WHO want to inform and target preparedness work in each European country based on its level of risk. We call particularly on countries at higher risk to strengthen their national capacities and prioritize the activities that will prevent a large Zika outbreak,” she added. Results of the risk assessment WHO assessed the risk of an outbreak in Member States in the European region and Lichtenstein, based on the likelihood of Zika virus spread and existing national capacity to prevent or rapidly contain local transmission. The assessment found that the likelihood of local Zika virus transmission, if no measures are taken to mitigate the threat, is moderate in 18 countries in the European region and high in limited geographical areas such as the island of Madeira and the north-eastern coast of the Black Sea. This means that the areas in the region with the presence of Aedes aegypti, the primary Zika vector, have a high likelihood of local Zika virus transmission. Specifically, 18 countries (33 per cent) have a moderate likelihood, owing to the presence of Aedes albopictus, a secondary Zika vector, while 36 countries (66 per cent) have a low, very low or no likelihood, owing to the absence of Aedes mosquitoes and/or suitable climatic conditions for their establishment. Capacity and risk The results of a questionnaire on capacity – how fast and well a country would respond to Zika virus spread – from 51 Member States in the region and Liechtenstein indicate that 41 countries (79 per cent) have good and very good capacity, although specific capacities varied substantially, WHO noted. Combining the likelihood and capacity results provided the estimated level of risk of a Zika virus outbreak. The results show that across the WHO European region the risk is low to moderate during late spring and summer. For countries with high and moderate likelihood of local Zika virus transmission, WHO recommends strengthening vector-control activities to prevent the introduction and spread of mosquitoes, and reduce their density (particularly for areas with Aedes aegypti); and equipping health professionals to detect local transmission of Zika virus early and to report the first case of local transmission, as well as complications from infections, within 24 hours of diagnosis. The agency also recommends ensuring that the skills and capacity to test for Zika virus or protocols to ship blood samples abroad are in place, and encourages communities to reduce mosquito breeding sites. “We stand ready to support European countries on the ground in case of Zika virus outbreaks,” said Nedret Emiroglu, Director of the Communicable Diseases and Health Security Division, WHO Regional Office for Europe. “Our support to countries in the region to prepare for and respond to health risks such as Zika is a key aspect of the reform of WHO’s work in emergencies.” To address the risk of Zika virus spread in the European region, WHO is scaling up efforts to provide guidance on vector control in coordination with other sectors; facilitate the shipment of samples to WHO reference laboratories or deliver diagnostic tools for local testing; and advise on risk communication and community engagement. In addition, WHO will convene a regional consultation in Portugal from 22 to 24 June to examine the conclusions of the risk assessment and identify countries’ needs, strengths and gaps in relation to preventing and responding to Zika virus disease. read more

Senior shortstop Lilli Piper (22) celebrates after coming into home safely in a game against Indiana on March 24 at Buckeye Field. Ohio State won 2-0. Credit: Gretchen Rudolph | For The LanternComing off a four-win week the Ohio State softball team (29-14, 12-5 Big Ten) will return to Buckeye Field for the final time to start a three-game series against Illinois (27-19, 6-11 Big Ten).Ohio State continued its five-game win streak against Ohio and Michigan State, and hope to build off that momentum against the Fighting Illini.“I am excited,” freshman infielder Ashley Prange said. “We are going to finish strong, and finish Big Ten strong.”Many players saw success this past week. Senior shortstop Lilli Piper hit .700 with three home runs and five RBI, earning her the Big Ten Player of the Week award, the fifth of her career. “Our pitching was strong, we played good defense,” Ohio State head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly said. “It was one of the first weekends we put it all together.”Illinois, on the other hand, has lost its past four games against two strong teams: Michigan and Northwestern.“They played some tough teams,” Schoenly said. “I anticipate they will be ready and hungry this weekend to change the way of losing recently for them.”However, there are some Illinois players Ohio State needs to watch out for. Sophomore catcher Bella Loya leads the Fighting Illini with a .411 average, 12 home runs and 46 RBI. Senior outfielder Kiana Sherlund also has a .380 AVG and 44 runs this season. Illinois freshman pitcher Sydney Sickels holds a 3.27 ERA with a 17-11 record. However, Ohio State senior pitcher Morgan Ray has a 2.09 ERA and recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts against Michigan State last week. Schoenly said the team will try to be strong in big moments, minimizing Illinois’s big plays and maximizing Ohio State’s big plays. “Every series have its own identity,” Schoenly said. “For us, it’s gonna be a matter of getting out so we can get them, so they can’t have big innings.” However, Schoenly said the Buckeyes are also excited to play, especially with it being the last home series of the season.  “The girls are excited to be at Buckeye Field, play in front of our fans and use this momentum to help us,” Schoenly said. Ohio State will open the series against Illinois at 6 p.m. Friday The second game will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, and the final game will start at 1 p.m. Sunday. read more

first_imgI was day dreaming the other day about our string of nice weekends and the puffy clouds, thunder and hail in between. What a variety of weather we enjoy. That brought to mind a column I wrote 10 years ago on April 28, 2002 that really sums it up. It went like this:“Someone once said that there is no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather. That may be up for debate especially when disaster strikes, however, by and large for everyone that wants the sun to shine, there are those who wish a little rain would fall.“The nice thing about living in the Pacific Northwest is that there is such a varied contrast of weather and climate. There is something for everyone and if you don’t like the weather just wait a little while and it will change. And change it does. There is another old saying in this neck of the woods that my father told me at an early age. ‘To predict weather in the Northwest, you have to be a newcomer or a darn fool.’“With the huge Pacific Ocean to the west, mountain ranges to the east and a myriad of microclimates in between, forecasting the weather is indeed a challenge. Native Northwesterners and longtime residents have a pretty good handle on what to expect and what signs to heed. Meteorologists generally have a good idea what the weather will be, but sometimes the timing is off a bit. Satellite pictures may show us the clouds coming our way, but what is it doing under those clouds? That is the big challenge for weather forecasters. We give it our best shot.”Enjoy your Sunday and get ready to say hello to May!Patrick Timm is a local weather specialist. His column appears Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Reach him at read more

first_img944 San Francisco944 Media LAUNCHEDPUBLISHER Washington CEOTiger Oak Publications Confronting ChallengesGenerally, regional publications have responded differently to economic slowdowns than national publications because regional advertisers are not impacted by the same issues as national advertisers, says Kim Mac Leod, president of Regional Media Advisors, an M&A advisory company for the regional market. Each type of regional magazine—city or area-focused lifestyle, alternative newsweeklies, business journals and special interest, to name a few—has its own challenges. For instance, regionals whose revenues have been derived primarily from severely hit advertising categories have been impacted most. According to the Jordan Edmiston Group managing director Tom Pecht, there were three big “waves” of advertisers that “turned down their faucets” in 2008: first real estate, then banking, then upscale jewelry.“Regionals that have been reliant on real estate advertising, especially in places like Florida and Arizona, were the first to feel the effects,” Pecht says. “So many had become dependent on developing sections, like multiple-page supplements, that were pure real estate.  Now, they’re taking a hit there. If you were tied to certain areas in which the advertising faucets have dried up, you’re going to be swimming upstream for a while, trying to keep your head above water.”Even general interest city titles haven’t been immune. “Our advertising revenues, both national and local, are down double digits year-to-year,” says Emmis Publishing president Gary Thoe. Emmis—which publishes several city magazines including Texas Monthly, Indianapolis Monthly, Atlanta and Los Angeles—this summer reduced 4.5 percent of its workforce and, in November, cut corporate salaries 3 percent for employees who earn more than $50,000 per year.  “Like other publishers, we are dealing with smaller revenue streams,” Thoe says. “It is very difficult to forecast even the next 60 days, much less the next year.”Long-established regional titles with paid circulations, while “hurting to some degree,” are faring better than newer titles that serve super niche markets, says City and Regional Magazine Association executive director James Dowden. “Our sense is that member ad page counts are flat to negative 6 percent to 7 percent through November,” Dowden tells FOLIO:. “That’s not bad considering what we are hearing about nationals and other media. However, we are all concerned about going forward as consumers continue to hold back.” Looking Forward: The Keys to SuccessThe regional market has a unique opportunity to leverage advertisers in creative, effective ways. “We have some important advantages over other publishing sectors,” says David Lipson, president of Metrocorp, which publishes city magazines including Philadelphia and Boston. “Most of our clients are locally owned businesses and we know the owners. We can sit down and discuss a variety of options that can help them through these difficult times.”This holds true for larger publishers who can attract national advertisers that have local outlets. “For national advertisers, we provide advertising and promotional support that’s closest to the sales transaction,” Lipson says. “In Philadelphia, we’ve done in-store promotions that have created as much as $100,000 in sales in a single store in a single night.”Depending on the market, regional publishers also can expand their footprint by launching pointed ancillary products, says Mac Leod. “The uniqueness of regional publishing is that it can leverage brands and advertisers more nimbly and quickly than a national publisher—with brand extensions, ancillary products and services—that go deeper into the same market and leverage resources most effectively,” she said.A good example of this, according to Pecht, is Wick Allison and his Texas-based D magazine group, which includes spinoffs D Home, D CEO, D Weddings and other specialty and custom magazines, as well as local newspaper group People Newspapers. “He [Allison] has managed to capture the upscale, local and national advertisers in D magazine, and then target those same advertisers with businesses in specific neighborhoods with the newspapers and other magazines,” Pecht says. “He’s able to capture a larger slice of that available local dollar. The model is working.”A Quick Look at Some Regional Titles Launched (And Folded) in 2008 Michigan Avenue Niche Media Throughout the turmoil in the national publishing landscape, the regional magazine market has been one of the few bright spots in the industry. Taking advantage of a lower barrier to entry, regional publishers over the first six months of 2008 continued launching print editions—many vertical launches, including business journals, home/design magazines and luxury titles. According to, regionals were the second biggest category in 2008 in terms of launches (there were 24, although that’s down from 42 launches a year ago). But as the bottom fell out of the U.S. economy, some of the ill effects that rocked the national market began spilling over into regionals, too (particularly in markets where local magazines seem oversaturated, such as Atlanta, which boasts at least 15 different publications). “Oklahoma Today is in its 53rd year, and as recently as 20 years ago we were the only game in town,” says publisher Joan Henderson. “Now there are more than 10 free magazines in our market. We have to stay sharp and always work on our visibility.”“No one in the world is immune to what’s going on right now, but regionals certainly are less vulnerable than a lot of national magazines,” says Michael Carr, president of Las Vegas-based regional publisher Greenspun Media. “When times are challenging, readers want to know what’s important to them within five miles of their front door. That’s where regional magazines, which are closer to the markets they serve, make a difference.”Even Greenspun, which has magazines in 19 luxury markets, has felt the pinch. This fall, the company reduced its workforce in a streamlining initiative (at Greenspun and subsidiary Niche Media) that reduced its printing operation from five locations to two and its printing operation from “several” locations to one, says Carr. Niche Media also folded 50,000-circ Atlanta Peach in early December. first_img Share Ahn Young-joon/APA man at the Seoul, South Korea, train station last August watches a news program featuring President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.The White House appeared Friday to put conditions on a much anticipated meeting between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, with press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders saying it would only happen once the rogue nation takes “concrete and verifiable action” to demonstrate its commitment to denuclearization.“We’ve accepted the invitation to talk based on them following through on concrete actions on the promises they’ve made,” Sanders said Friday. The surprise announcement of a possible Trump-Kim summit came after the president met Thursday with South Korean national security adviser Chung Eui-yong. Chung briefed the president about his recent meeting with Kim in Pyongyang. But less than 24 hours later, the White House appeared to hedge somewhat and call into question whether the meeting would ever come to fruition. Sanders appeared to add the condition that North Korea take tangible steps toward denuclearization before any meeting takes place. Last year, North Korea successfully tested its intercontinental ballistic missiles. When pressed by reporters if that meant that the meeting might not happen after all, Sanders underscored that the onus was on North Korea. She emphasized that “nothing” had changed from the U.S. viewpoint and that Trump’s “maximum pressure campaign” against North Korea would continue.Sanders didn’t outline the actions that would fulfill that denuclearization prerequisite, saying only that the national security and intelligence community would make those determinations. A time and place for the Trump-Kim meeting have not yet been set, although South Korea says it is expected by May.As NPR’s Elise Hu reported Thursday, “Any meeting between these two leaders would be historic. The U.S. has no diplomatic ties with North Korea; the countries are adversaries dating to the Korean War and repeatedly traded heated insults last year, including Trump’s remarks at the United Nations, in which he vowed to ‘totally destroy’ North Korea if the U.S. was threatened.”Trump has also ribbed Kim on social media frequently, only heightening global tensions. Trump often referred to Kim as “Little Rocket Man” and bragged on Twitter that his nuclear button in the U.S. is bigger than the North Korean leader’s.Sanders also denied that the Thursday announcement had been haphazard in any way or that key foreign policy officials had been left out. Hours before the announcement, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had declared that the U.S. is “a long ways from negotiations” with North Korea. But Tillerson, who is traveling in Africa, later emphasized a distinction between formal negotiations and what he called “talks.”Sanders also pushed back on the reports that national security adviser H.R. McMaster could be on his way out and said she had no reason to believe that McMaster wouldn’t be a part of the upcoming North Korea talks. Sanders called the three-star Army general a “valued member” of the Trump administration.“Look, the president has an incredible team that is surrounding him,” Sanders said. “But at the end of the day, the ultimate person to lead that negotiation or that conversation and be at the table will be the president.”Copyright 2018 NPR. first_imgPermadelete: remove files securely on Windows PCs by Martin Brinkmann on February 20, 2017 in Software – Last Update: February 20, 2017 – 14 commentsPermadelete is a new open source program for Microsoft Windows devices that you may use to remove files securely from the PC.The delete operation on Windows does not really do what the majority of users expects it to do. Instead of removing the contents of a file and its reference from the system, delete simply removes the reference but leaves the contents on the disk. The parts of the disk are set to write again, so that data may overwrite the deleted file eventually. Until that is the case though, file recovery tools may recover the deleted files completely or partially. We have reviewed several secure file deletion programs in the past: there are FileWing Shredder and Hardwipe, Free File Wiper, RightDelete, and the excellent Eraser to name just a few.Not all of these programs work in the same way. Eraser for instance overwrites the free disk space so that deleted data cannot be restored anymore.Update: The lead developer of Permadelete added information to the GitHub project repository as a result of our review. It explains core issues that we had with the program. First, the Internet connection on start is an update check. Second, for SSDs, files are merely deleted but not overwritten.PermadeletePermadelete is a new entry in the niche. It is an early version of an open source program for Windows. It does require Microsoft .Net Framework 4.5, needs to be installed, and tries to establish a connection on start which you may want to block as it is not clear why it does so (maybe update check). The interface of Permadelete is compact. You may drag and drop files or folders to the interface to have them deleted securely, or use the shred files or shred folders icons instead to use a file browser for selecting files or folders. The application displays an option during installation to add it to the “send to” menu of Explorer. You may use it to send files or folders directly from Explorer to Permadelete. The program displays a security prompt whenever you drag something to the interface. You need to accept it by selecting “shred it” to start the secure deletion process. There is nothing more to the program other than that right now. Permadelete overwrites the locations the dropped files or folders are stored on with random characters. The program lacks any options, and what weights more heavily, returns no status information after the shredding. While it displays the “are you sure” prompt when you drop files to the interface, it does not return anything after the process completes.Another issue that is not addressed right now is that it makes no distinction between platter-based hard drives and Solid State Drives. Secure delete tools don’t work reliably with Solid State Drives, and programs like Permadelete should at least inform users about that when files or folders are dragged from SSDs.Closing WordsPermadelete is a work in progress. It works considerably well for files stored on non-Solid State Drives, but could use feedback after the deletion process, and an option to turn off update checks. Now You: How do you handle deleted data on your devices?Summary12345 Author Rating3.5 based on 10 votes Software Name PermadeleteOperating System WindowsSoftware Category AdministrationLanding Page Advertisementlast_img read more
