Obviously my life has changed a lot. I never thought this would happen. The last two days were awesome. I am not nervous with the expectations. In fact, I am very happy and excited because I used to think I have to become a very big player but once I won a medal and people come take photographs. It is a great feeling,” Sindhu told India Today Television in an exclusive interview on Wednesday. When the tournament began, I used to take one match at a time, winning one by one. I was not disappointed with the Silver. In a match one should win and one should lose. For me, it was a very good week. I was very happy,” she said.Sindhu added that she was focused on her immediate targets and not thinking too far ahead. There is a huge amount of pleasure, gratitude and responsibility as well. But I am greatly satisfied with the past few months of training,” Gopichand told India Today Television.”There has been a lot of God’s grace in what we have been able to achieve so far. Hopefully, we should be able to able to achieve more. I would say world badminton is really tough and there needs to be a lot of effort which needs to be put in to get there (to get Gold in Tokyo 2020 Olympics). I only hope we are strong enough to work hard for the next four years. Hopefully, if things go well, we will deliver,” he said.Gopichand also said that wrestler Sakshi Malik’s Bronze medal which came before Sindhu’s Gold-medal match against Spain’s Carolina Marin was a relief and took some pressure off their shoulders.”We were there at the game all through. We saw how each one of them was so desperate for a medal. But somehow it was elusive, it just didn’t come. And luckily for us, Sakshi Malik’s medal came just before Sindhu’s medal and in a way that helped us. It relieved some pressure off us. Sakshi’s medal was important,” he said.CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE VIDEOlast_img read more

first_imgThe International Cricket Council (ICC) has given the green light to a Test championship and one-day international league, while countries are also welcome to experiment with four-day Tests, the world governing body said on Friday.A Test championship has long been mooted as a means to make the longest form of the game more relevant for fans who have increasingly turned towards limited-overs matches.ICC Chief Executive Dave Richardson told reporters in Auckland on Friday that while details still needed to be worked out, the Test championship would commence after the 50-overs World Cup in 2019 and culminate with a final in mid-2021.Nine of the 12 Test-approved countries — Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Ireland will initially be excluded — will play three home and three away series over the two years that count towards the championship. The series can be a minimum of two matches and maximum of five, with all Tests to be five days in length. The top-two teams in April 2021 will meet in the final two months later.Richardson added that a 13-team ODI league would be introduced from 2021 and determine which teams qualify for the World Cup in India two years later.Chief Executive David Richardson speaks about the new Test and ODI leagues after the ICC meetings in Auckland. first_imgOTTAWA — A new University of Calgary study is predicting Russian interference in the federal election campaign to serve what it describes as the Kremlin’s long-term interest of competing against Canada in the Arctic. The study’s author, Sergey Sukhankin, said in an interview that Moscow’s ability to inflict serious damage is relatively low because Canadian society is not as divided as countries targeted in past elections, including the United States presidential ballot and Britain’s Brexit referendum in 2016, as well as various attacks on Ukraine and the Baltic states.“The Kremlin has a growing interest in dominating the Arctic, where it sees Russia as in competition with Canada. This means Canada can anticipate escalations in information warfare, particularly from hacktivists fomenting cyber-attacks,” writes Sukhankin, a senior fellow with the Jamestown Foundation, a U.S. think-tank, who is teaching at the University of Calgary.“Perceived as one of Russia’s chief adversaries in the Arctic region, Canada is a prime target in the information wars, with Russia potentially even meddling in the October 2019 federal election. Ottawa should be ready for a new surge in cyberattacks, disinformation and propaganda levelled against Canada in the near future.”Sukhankin argues that Moscow’s disinformation efforts are designed primarily for domestic Russian consumption, and are not intended to sway Canadian voters. It is part of a broader Kremlin effort to show the “ugly side of democracy and liberalism” to a Russian audience, and to portray Canada as being unduly influenced by the United States and the “Ukrainian lobby” in Canada, he writes.“Russia uses patriotism and this anti-fascist sentiment to convince the domestic audience and Russian-speakers abroad, primarily in Ukraine, Belarus and the three Baltic states, that Russia is the only country to stand against far-right sentiments and nationalism. This is basically used by the Russian side to garner domestic solidarity,” he said in an interview.Sukhankin’s argument echoes previous warnings about potential Russian interference from the Liberal government, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, and the country’s intelligence agencies. The government has appointed a group of five senior public servants to guard against foreign election meddling during the campaign. The public servants will be able to brief members of all political parties about potential threats and will have the power to go public during the campaign to sound the alarm against malign acts of interference that they together deem a fundamental threat.Canada expelled four Russian diplomats last year in connection with the poisoning of an ex-spy in Britain that has been blamed on Moscow. (The Kremlin denies the charge). At the time, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said the diplomats were intelligence agents who were undermining Canadian democracy. As Sukhankin’s paper notes, Freeland has been a frequent target of Russian propaganda as part of a broader attempt to brand Canada as “russophobic” and having an “affection for fascism,” including a soft-spot for Nazism that dates back to the 1930s.The goal is to justify Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula — the most serious breach of Europe’s border since the Second World War — which President Vladimir Putin has said was necessary to protect “Russian-speakers in Ukraine against their physical extermination,” writes Sukhankin.Russia’s disinformation about Canada also focuses on three other areas, according to the report. These include ridiculing Canada’s military presence in Latvia as part of NATO’s deterrent against Russia, portraying the country as a “useful satellite” of the U.S., and calling it a testing ground for “immoral Western values” because of its support of same-sex marriage and legalizing of cannabis.Mike Blanchfield, The Canadian Presslast_img read more

Greyhound said it was ending passenger service after years of adjusting schedules and prices because ridership had fallen by nearly 41 per cent across the country since 2010. Butler said the package service is down 35 per cent in the same period.A spokeswoman for Purolator wouldn’t comment directly on Greyhound’s service, but said the closing won’t affect its business plans.“We don’t expect this news will affect Purolator going forward. In fact, we have been growing and expanding our services and capabilities,” Courtney Reistetter wrote in an email.James Anderson, a spokesman for FedEx Canada, wouldn’t comment on the Greyhound service, but said his firm is well able to handle delivery demand with a total of 38 hubs or facilities throughout Western Canada.Margaret Becker, who operates a “hotshot” delivery business at Fort St. John in northeastern B.C., said the oil and gas sector uses Greyhound as an equipment parts delivery service and to transport workers to towns near their drilling sites.“Someone else will take it over,” she said, adding demand is low now because depressed natural gas prices have stalled local activity in the sector. The loss of Greyhound’s package service in Western Canada stirred up memories for Calgarian Gary Blaney, 50, who recalled dozens of packages delivered over the years by Greyhound to his far-flung family members.“For as long as I can remember, my family has used Greyhound to send boxes of presents at Christmas time,” he said. “It was the most affordable way and the most reliable way.”He said his family’s flow of packages sent by Greyhound peaked when he was growing up in a small town in Saskatchewan when it was the best way to connect with relatives in Ontario, Alberta and B.C.But that traffic has almost entirely stopped since he moved to Calgary more than a decade ago.“That’s the world we live in. Lots of other ways to send stuff these days.” CALGARY — Package delivery firms say they are prepared to fill the gap when Greyhound Canada closes most of its Western Canada operations this fall. The company says its Greyhound Package Express service will no longer be available in most parts of B.C., northern Ontario and all of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba after it ends passenger service at the end of October.“It might create some opportunities for us on our small package delivery side of things,” said Dennis Steele, owner of Steele’s Transfer in Calgary.Transport companies like his compete with Greyhound’s lower prices by offering services tailored to customer needs, he said.Greyhound Canada to end service in Prairies, B.C., eliminating 415 jobs — and leaving small towns in the lurch‘I’m worried’: Greyhound route cuts in Western Canada mean more than the loss of a way to travelColby Cosh: Oh no! MONTREAL – Metro’s surprise decision to sell nearly half of its stake in convenience store operator Alimentation Couche-Tard has prompted industry observers to speculate that the grocer is either eyeing an acquisition or looking to reward its shareholders. The Montreal-based company announced after markets closed on Tuesday that it was selling 48.2 per cent of its 25-year investment in Couche-Tard to three Canadian banks for $479 million. The net proceeds are estimated at around $380 million.Chief executive Eric La Fleche said Metro was evaluating how to use the proceeds, including growth investments and returns to shareholders.Likely acquisition targets are in Canada’s grocery or pharmacy sector, including B.C. supermarket chain Overwaitea, Safeway Canada, Rexall pharmacy or Quebec’s Uniprix pharmacy.Keith Howlett of Desjardins Capital Markets also suggested Familiprix and Jean Coutu (TSX:PJC.A) may be contenders. The analyst said Metro (TSX:MRU) has a track record of “highly effective acquisitions” including Loeb stores, A&P and a stake in specialty retailer Adonis. In the past, it had said it wouldn’t sell Couche-Tard shares until it had a good use for the proceeds.“Our view is that the announced sale of Couche-Tard shares is driven by an identified use of proceeds, not by market timing,” Howlett wrote in a report.Irene Nattel of RBC Capital Markets believes Metro will most likely use the proceeds to buy back its shares and pay down debt.“We do not believe Metro has an acquisition in its sights at this time,” she wrote.Recent media reports have speculated about a potential sale of a portion of Safeway’s 225 stores, but Nattel doesn’t believe Metro is “preparing a war chest at this time.”Instead, she suggested Metro could increase its share buy back to the maximum permitted level of six million shares and repay up to $260 million of debt.Metro earned its stake in Canada’s largest convenience store operator after it sold its small convenience store business in 1987. Instead of taking cash, it gained Couche-Tard shares.“Surely among the best investments the company has made,” Nattel added. She expects Metro will increase its quarterly dividend next week for the 18th consecutive year by 15 per cent to about 24 or 25 cents per share. The pay out rate of 22 per cent would be consistent with the rate over the last seven years. She raised Metro’s price target by $2 to $67, but lowered her earnings forecast for fiscal 2013 and 2014 to reflect the reduction in Couche-Tard (TSX:ATD.B) contribution. Her new EPS target is $4.97 and $5.38 per share respectively. For the first quarter, she forecasts earnings will rise 13 per cent from last year to $1.14 per share, in line with other analysts, on a one per cent growth in same-store sales.Howlett expects an 11.6 per cent increase in the dividend,On the Toronto Stock Exchange, Metro’s shares gained 72 cents at $63.42 in Wednesday morning trading. first_img Ginetta’s Akula supercar has race-inspired aerodynamics The results of the tests were surprisingly definitive. The engine had 19 times less carbon built up on it after being run with Top Tier fuel than it did with standard gasoline. The AAA test’s 100 hours of running worked out to around 4,000 miles for each test, so take those results and extrapolate them out to 40,000 miles or 100,000 miles and you start to get an idea of why manufacturers recommend Top Tier.AAA also found out that over 12 months, the average difference in price between Top Tier and standard gasoline was only around 3 cents per gallon. So, if you plan on keeping your car for a while and you’re able to shell out a few extra bucks on gas in a calendar year, it might be a good thing to try. Share your voice Now playing: Watch this: Enlarge ImageTop Tier fuel from name-brand stations might cost a little extra, but science says it’s worth it. Michele Sandberg/Getty Images You’ve probably seen dozens of articles, videos and social media posts telling you what kind of gas you should really be putting in your car, or that premium fuel is a waste of money in most cases, and so on, ad nauseum. Those stories and videos aren’t entirely wrong, but what we haven’t seen much of is an investigation into the “Top Tier” fuels that came about in the early 2000s, the logo of which has been a staple of gas flaps on fine vehicles the world over ever since. So, to cut back on speculation, AAA undertook a study to prove whether Top Tier did anything. Before you start warming up your commenting fingers, when we talk about Top Tier fuel, we don’t mean the grade of fuel and its corresponding octane rating. The whole “Top Tier” thing is more about the amount and type of detergents and cleaners in the fuel, not how hard it will make you hit VTEC in your 2004 Civic. To test whether the Top Tier fuel standard was worth the money, the fine folks at AAA decided to do some science. For its test, AAA ran an engine on a stand for 100 hours before tearing it down, then photographing, measuring and weighing all its components. They ran the experiment six times, with three randomly chosen Top Tier fuels and three randomly chosen standard fuels. One of the issues could be that, at age 42, Dawson has to double-dip with kickoff duties as well as field goals. Top Stories “They had two young guys to kick off and they wanted them to win the job so Phil wouldn’t have to kick off. Neither one of them won the job,” Feely said. “I just know that as an older guy the impacts that kickoffs had.“The analogy I give is if you lose your driver, I was teeing off with a 3-iron every hole. It has an impact on you physically and mentally as well.”Feely said that losing long snapper Aaron Brewer in Week 5 could affect the snap-hold-kick process.“If you see the ball the whole way, the entire time you are attacking the ball and hitting the ball you are comfortable and confident. When the ball isn’t there and the holder has to reach somewhere else and you don’t get to see it until the last minute, that makes it more difficult, no question,” said Feely. Many fans were excited when the Cardinals signed the 18-year veteran this offseason since he has hit 84 percent of his career attempts and is only four field goals shy of 500 for his career. But with six misses in only eight games, the acquisition has proved underwhelming. On a positive note, Dawson has hit 13 of 13 extra point attempts this season and will look to redeem himself Thursday against the Seahawks.
